It has been 30 years since the first Toy Story movie was released, establishing Pixar as a major animation studio and introducing viewers to beloved characters like Woody (the actor) and Buzz Lightyear (the voice talent), who are now famous worldwide.

Coming in 2026, the next chapter is set to arrive. The first teaser trailer for Toy Story 5 landed this week, providing a glimpse into the plot but keeping fans curious how it will address the conclusion of Toy Story 4.

The Latest Addition: A Digital Device Frightens the Toys

The preview reveals Bonnie — who inherited the toy collection when he left for college — receiving a latest plaything, one that terrifies Woody, Buzz, and the crew. Bonnie acquires her first tablet computer, and she is thrilled about it.

Presumably, the frog-shaped tablet will come to life just like Bonnie's other toys. However, the characters appear to consider it as a threat intending to supplant them, which it probably is.

Woody's Return: Mysteries from Toy Story 4

One thing the trailer doesn't touch on is what the sheriff is back with his companions in the child's bedroom. The end of Toy Story 4 depicted him embark on a fresh journey with the shepherdess (Annie Potts), traveling with a carnival and assisting giveaway items locate loving owners.

Certainly, Pixar will address the aftermath of Toy Story 4 in the movie. Witnessing him appear in the familiar setting unexpectedly is a little strange, though. It also makes us wonder whether his partner will have returned with him. And what about Duke Caboom (Keanu Reeves)?

Connections from the Previous Film

Fortunately, some elements are continuing from the earlier movie. The final act Woody did before departing for his new life was pass his symbol of authority to Jessie (the voice actor), leaving her as the leader of the toy domain. In the teaser shows the badge pinned to her shirt.

Hopefully she is still the key figure among the group.

Toy Story 5 arrives in theaters on June 19, 2026.
