Crew Member Discloses Mental Health Struggle Following Deluge of Online Abuse After Historic Trip

A Vietnamese-American astronaut has opened up regarding her struggle with mental health after being subjected to a “tsunami of harassment” in the aftermath of a pioneering women-only spaceflight.

Amanda Nguyen – celebrated as a scientist and civil rights advocate – was part of the short-duration mission in April, which also featured celebrity crewmates.

The much-publicized journey was heavily criticized by some, who cited its expense and ecological impact.

Reflecting on the experience, the astronaut, who became the first Vietnamese woman in space, stated the negative reaction buried her dreams under an “avalanche of misogyny”.

“I explained the depression could persist for a long time,” the astronaut shared in a online statement, describing a check-in call from a fellow crew member in the days following the flight.

She described the subsequent media coverage and social media frenzy as an “onslaught no human brain has evolved to endure”.

“I did not leave Texas for a week, unable to get out of bed,” she revealed. “A month later… I had to hang up… because I could not speak through my tears.”

Overshadowed by Sexism

Ms. Nguyen, who has conducted studies in gynecological science and operated research during the flight, said all her lifelong efforts – from her scientific research and astronaut training to the personal milestone of her heritage – was buried under the tide of misogyny.

She is best known for her tireless campaigning protecting the rights of survivors of assault.

Her own goal of reaching space was put on hold after an attack during her college days, leading to a long campaign for accountability.

Finding Solid Ground

Now, eight months after reaching space, she has stated the heaviest sorrow is beginning to clear, and she acknowledged the supporters whose messages of encouragement helped save her. “Your support rescued me,” she affirmed.

She concluded that even with the backlash, considerable good had resulted from the mission, such as spotlight on her women's health research and new advocacy opportunities.

The Historic Journey

The fully automated New Shepard rocket lifted off from Texas in the spring, carrying the historic roster on a short trip that crossed the internationally recognized boundary of outer space.

The diverse crew also included experts in different industries.

The company behind the mission is a commercial aerospace company established by a prominent billionaire entrepreneur.
